Unfortunately, two boys lost their lives here when they fell through the ice. The park was later dedicated to the Metropolitan Parks District, courtesy of a gift from R. A. Booth. William Glundberg recognized the potential for a nature center on the site in the 1970s.
The Discovery Pond Nature-based Playground is an environmentally-friendly playground. It features a recirculating water feature and several natural-looking play elements. The play area is ADA accessible and restored to the original site. In addition to bringing a new dimension to the park, the Discovery Pond is also ADA-compliant.
