The idea of opening a museum for the medium of glass came from Dr. Philip Phibbs, the former president of the University of Puget Sound. He was inspired by a chance meeting with Dale Chihuly, who was studying glass in the Pacific Northwest. Phibbs took this opportunity to pitch his idea for the Museum of Glass to the Executive Council for Greater Tacoma. The timing was perfect – the museum’s opening coincided with the city’s plans to revitalize Thea Foss Waterway. Chairman George Russel thought the Museum of Glass would be the perfect anchor for this transformation.
