Washington State History Museum
Located near the historic Union Station, the Washington State History Museum offers an overview of the region’s past, culture, and people. The museum has been in existence since 1891, and boasts a diverse collection. The museum’s building resembles the old Union Station building. It is home to the manuscripts of famous authors such as Charles Darwin and Ernest Shackleton. The museum also has pencil drawings by Norman Rockwell.
While the museum is a must-see, many people flock to the gallery and art museum. The Benaroya Collection, an art museum with hundreds of works by Northwest and international artists, has recently been donated to the museum. Admission is free for museum members, military veterans, and children. All other visitors must purchase admission tickets. There are special student days and other special events that are held here.
Located south of Tacoma’s Museum Row, the LeMay Collection houses some of the world’s most unique cars. Named after a prominent Tacoma businessman, the museum displays some of the city’s most expensive and rare automobiles. Located in a waterfront city, Tacoma is a popular day trip from Seattle. The city offers plenty of outdoor activities and a vibrant art and culture scene. The museum celebrates the maritime heritage of Tacoma. In addition to its exhibits on maritime history, the museum includes models of commercial vessels constructed by the Benaroya Brothers. You can also see early scuba equipment, vintage fishing lures, and sculptures of marine debris. Kids can learn about the city’s rich history by taking a tour of the museum’s ship building shop, where volunteers work on historic craft boats. The museum also offers a kids’ craft room for children. And its docents are well-informed and knowledgeable about Tacoma.
Visitors will also appreciate the architecture of the city. Lakewold Gardens Estate was developed by a shipping magnate, and was designed by the Olmsteads, the architects behind Central Park. The Museum of Glass, located near the Tacoma waterfront, features three pieces by Dale Chihuly. The Seaform Pavilion features glass art inspired by the sea. The Crystal Towers are more than 100 pieces of art, including a Dale Chihuly installation.
